PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially simple method for the selective production of an N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid which is a mono-addition product having excellent chelating property and excellent biodegradability derived from its secondary amine structure and obtained by the addition of a (meth)acrylic acid compound to an amino acid compound, or the like, while suppressing the formation of impurity polymers, the nonuniformity caused by the separation and precipitation of the solution and the formation of a di-addition product containing a tertiary amine structure having poor biodegradability. SOLUTION: This method for producing an N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid contains a step to obtain a solution containing the N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid by reacting a (meth)acrylic acid compound in a reaction liquid obtained by partly or completely neutralizing an amino acid compound. In the above process, the addition of the (meth)acrylic acid compound to the reaction liquid is carried out by dropping the compound after partly or completely neutralizing the amino acid compound.
