Method for preparing water-softening tablets (A), for use in aqueous washing and cleaning liquors, in which some components are first processed to granules (B), then mixed with the other ingredients before pressing to tablets. Method for preparing water-softening tablets (A), for use in aqueous washing and cleaning liquors, in which granules (B) are first prepared comprising at least one each of low molecular weight solid carboxylic acid (I), the alkali salt of (I), alkali carbonate and alkali silicate (II). (B) are then mixed with the other components and pressed into tablets. (B) are produced by mixed granulation of finely divided material with addition of an aqueous granulation fluid, then dried.
