PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens having a small number of constituting lenses, which is made compact and has excellent optical performance and optical equipment using the same. SOLUTION: This zoom lens possesses the first lens group of negative refracting power, the second lens group of positive refracting power and the third lens group of positive refracting power in order from an object side, and zooming is performed by moving lens groups so that an interval between the first lens group and the second lens group is made small and an interval between the second lens group and the third lens group is made large at a telephoto end as compared with them at a wide angle end, and the second lens group is constituted of the 2a-th lens group of positive refracting power and 2b-th lens group of positive refracting power, and the first lens group is constituted of the lenses of a negative lens and a positive lens and the 2a-th lens group is constituted of a positive lens, a positive lens and a negative lens, and an interval d2abw between the 2a-th lens group and the 2b-th lens group at the time of focusing at an infinite object at the wide angle end is appropriately set.
