PURPOSE: A catalyst composition for purification of exhaust gas comprising support and catalytic metal in which sulfur resistant refractory oxide is impregnated with solid acid and sulfuric acid is provided, and a method for preparing the catalyst composition is provided. CONSTITUTION: The catalyst for purification of exhaust gas comprises support and catalytic metal in which sulfur resistant refractory oxide is impregnated with solid acid and sulfuric acid, wherein the sulfur resistant refractory oxide is selected from silica, silica-alumina, titania (TiO2), zirconia (ZrO2), tin dioxide (SnO2), zirconia-titania (ZrO2-TiO2) mixed oxide, zirconia-tin dioxide (ZrO2-SnO2) mixed oxide, tin dioxide-titania (SnO2-TiO2) mixed oxide, zeolite, mordenite, or a mixture thereof, the sulfur resistant refractory oxide is zirconia or a zirconia-substrate mixed oxide, the sulfur resistant refractory oxide is zirconia-titania mixed oxide in which zirconia is mixed with titania in a mixing ratio of 2:98 to 98:2, the solid acid is tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide and is contained in the catalyst in the range of 1 to 90 wt.% based on the amount of the sulfur resistant refractory oxide, sulfuric acid is contained in the catalyst in the range of 0.5 to 10 wt.% based on the amount of the sulfur resistant refractory oxide, the catalytic metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), ruthenium (Ru), rhenium (Re) and a mixture thereof, and is contained in the amount of 0.01 to 10 wt.% based on the total amount of the support, and the catalyst comprises oxides or analogs of silicon, aluminum, iron, tin and/or cerium in a mixed oxide or composite oxide shape.
