PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical scale with a large degree of freedom in application and development in both aspects of machining and accuracy management by relatively inexpensively providing groove pitches with coarse parts and tight parts. SOLUTION: A large number of V-shaped grooves 13 are formed in parallel in a surface of a substrate 12 of a linear scale 11. The pitches P1, P2, P3, P4,..., intervals of the grooves 13, are in the relationship that P1<P2<P3<P4<... and machined in such a way that the groove pitches are gradually widened to the right side. The cross-sectional shapes of the grooves 13 are similar in shape to one another.
