Quenching tower comprises a quenching chamber (2); a shaft (3) extending above the chamber and into which vapor produced by quenching the coke rises; removal devices (5,6) in the shaft in the rising direction of the vapor; and scrubbing devices (9,11) in the rising direction of the vapor, such that droplets (T1) of quenching water are sprayed into the shaft, to partially condense the vapor stream and wash out the solid particles in the stream. Preferred Features: A second further scrubbing device is between the removal device. The fluid stream produced by the scrubbing device (9) is more than 50, especially 100-800 m<3>/hr.
