PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for an internal combustion engine capable of reducing the consumption of lubricating oil by making the surface roughness of a ring land part greater than the surface roughness of a skirt part. SOLUTION: The piston of the internal combustion engine is structured so that the outside diameter of its ring land part 1b to be fitted with a piston ring 2 and oil ring 3 is smaller than the outside diameter of the skirt part 1c, wherein the surface roughness of the ring land part 1b is made greater than the surface roughness of the skirt part 1c, to cause the lubricating oil attached to the ring land part 1b to be hindered from going toward the combustion chamber 4b owing to the surface roughness of the ring land part 1b, so that the consumption of the lubricating oil can be reduced, and also the processing time can be shortened because the surface of the ring land part 1b is allowed to remain rough, which ensures enhancement of the productivity.
