PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold cathode type electrode, in which consumption of argon is restrained and a discharge lamp, and to provide an illumination device, using the same. SOLUTION: The cold cathode type electrode 1 comprises a getter membrane 1b located on the outer face of the barrel part 1a2 of a cup-shape electrode base body 1a, which is positioned on the back of the nearly circular opening end part 101 and comprises a barrel part 1a2, having an outline that is contained with a margin within the outline of the opening end part 101, as seen from the axial direction, and comprises a current-density improving member 1c inside the cup-shape electrode base body 1a. The discharge lamp connects the cold cathode type electrode 1 at both ends of a long and narrow translucent discharge container 2 having a nearly circular cross section, so that the gap between the opening end part 1a1 and the inner face of the translucent discharge container 2 is 0.2 mm or less, and is filled with a discharge medium with mercury, neon and argon sealed therein.
