<p>Polyesters made by polycondensation of glycol terephthalates using a catalyst comprising a soln. of preformed GeO2 in glycol contg. 50-200 mol.% of an amine (I) (on GeO2). Pref. the catalyst soln. contains at least 3% (esp. at least 8%) GeO2. The amine is pref. a 2-20 C aliphatic amine, esp. a tert. amine such as triethylamine, trihexylamine etc; other suitable amines are n-butylamine, diethylamine, etc. Pref. the catalyst soln. is added when the degree of condensation of the polyester has reached 10-20, to minimise the formation of ether cpds. Presence of amine allows stable solns. of GeO2 contg. up to more than 10% GeO2 to be made.</p> |
