PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner which is capable of improving a read image in quality by a method wherein a read operation is carried out while the image scanner is attaching a manuscript, so that the manuscript is prevented from moving in a vertical direction at a reading position, a read image of high quality can be obtained as the image is in focus, the manuscript is attracted to an attraction member always and hardly comes into contact with a contact glass, so that printing ink is restrained from adhering to the contact glass because the manuscript is restrained from coming into contact with the contact glass, and the surface of the contact glass can be kept clean always. SOLUTION: The image scanner is equipped with a light source 2 which irradiates a manuscript with light, a line image sensor 10 which receives light reflected from a manuscript irradiated with light and converts the volume of the received light into electric signals, and a transfer device which transfers the manuscript. The image scanner reads the image of the manuscript which is transferred onto the read line 32 of the line image sensor 10 in the direction vertical to the read line and is equipped with an attracting member 40 which is capable of attracting the manuscript above the read line, and the line image sensor reads the image of the manuscript while the attracting member 40 is attracting the manuscript.
