Increasing tensile strength of carbon fibres

Fibres are heated to >800 degrees C pref. 1500 degrees C in atmosphere of inert carrier gas with source of halogenated hydrocarbon, pref. CCl4 or with 0.25-3 vol.% hydrocarbon gas pref. CH4. Fibre feed speed and oven length are such that fibres stay in hottest part of oven for at least 7 minutes.
