Such compounds are prepared by reacting a ketone of the formula with an alkyl haloacetate in the presence of a condensation catalyst, e.g. zinc and treating the product with acidified water to obtain a product of the formula The esters of the invention are obtained by dehydrating the above intermediate compound, e.g. by dissolving in pyridine and treating with phosphorus oxychloride. The alcohols are obtained by reducing the esters catalytically with hydrogen or with lithium aluminium hydride or sodium hydride. The aldehydes are obtained by oxidation of the alcohols in a suitable solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride with manganese dioxide.</p> |
