The fuel tank has an intermediate base or wash plate (16,18) between two or more tank sections (2,4,6). Some ends of the tank sections are formed to overlap radially, and to be pushed axially into each other. An axially projecting shoulder of intermediate base or wash plate is held positively between the axially connected ends. An axial stop for the shoulder is formed by a peripheral bead (42) to hold a tank fastener, esp. a tension strap. The connection between overlapping ends and shoulder is by plasma, MIG, or Laser welding, or by soldering. The tank sections are of aluminum or aluminum alloy, and base or wash plate are pref. of corrosion-proof steel.
