PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for production suitable for industrial production of a tricyclic compound or its salt useful as a synthetic intermediate for a medicine such as an arrhythmic agent. SOLUTION: This method for producing the tricyclic compound represented by general formula (II) (X1, X2, X3, X4, Y1, Y2 and Y3 are each the same or different and denote each hydrogen atom, a substituted or an substituted lower alkyl, a substituted or an substituted lower alkoxy or the like) is characterized by adding an acid anhydride to a compound represented by general formula (I) or its salt at >=70 deg.C and cyclizing the compound represented by general formula (I) or its salt.
