The invention relates to the use of compounds of formula (1) as emulsifiers in emulsion polymerisation. In said formula, R1 represents an alkyl or alkenyl group with between 1 and 8 carbon atoms, or a phenyl, methylphenyl or dimethylphenyl group, R2 represents a methyl or ethyl group, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, x is a number from 1 to 50 and y is a number from 1 to 500.
