A novel benzotriazole of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting (II) with sulfate ester or sulfonate ester (that is adequate to introduce R gp. i.e. dimethylsulfate, methyl-p-toluene sulfate) in the inert solvent. R=C1-4 straight or side-chain alkyl or allyl, x=H or Cl. Suspend 4,5-dichloro-1-hydroxy benzotriazole 153g into toluene 500 ml and mix with dimethyl sulfate 99g, reflux for about 1hr and cool, eliminate toluene-phase after adding ice water and suck-filter aq., heat-stir with DMF and refilter, wash with coolEtOH to obtain 105g (yield=68%) of 3-methyl-4,5dichlorobenzotria zole-1-N-oxide.
