PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent for forming an ink receiving layer which keeps a total balance of the properties of a coating liquid such as the uniformity and stability of the coating liquid, the suitability for printing (especially the luster of a printing part) and the properties of a coating film and a recording material showing the satisfactory luster of the printing part). SOLUTION: The coating agent for forming the ink receiving layer containing shellac and another hydrophilic resin and the recording material having the ink receiving layer composed of the coating agent formed on a base material are provided.
