An oxygen separation and combustion apparatus (1; 2; 3) in which fluid passages (18, 20, 22, 23) and oxygen transport membranes (12, 14, 16) are located within a combustion chamber (10). The oxygen transport membranes (12, 14, 16) separate oxygen to provide the oxygen for combustion of a fuel within the combustion chamber (10). The fluid passages (18, 20, 22, 23) are positioned to allow a portion of the heat of combustion to be transferred to heat the oxygen transport membranes (12, 14, 16) to an operational temperature and to heat the fluid, thereby to help stabilize the operational temperature of said oxygen transport membranes (12, 14, 16). The fuel is introduced into the combustion chamber (10) and the combustion products are discharged so that said combustion products flow in a direction predominantly parallel to said membranes (12, 14, 16). |
