PURPOSE: Provided are a method for producing a cathode active material for lithium secondary battery, which is capable of more conveniently producing a cathode active material with low costs, and a cathode active material for lithium secondary battery produced by the method. CONSTITUTION: The method, which is for producing a cathode active material for lithium secondary battery represented by formula 1, comprises the steps of (i) mixing a solution containing cobalt salt and M salt with a solution of lithium salt; (ii) adding a phosphate solution to the mixed solution; (iii) drying the mixed solution containing the cobalt salt, M salt, lithium salt and phosphate; and (iv) heat treating the dried product. Formula 1: LiCo1-xMxPO4(wherein 0<=x<=1, M represents metal or nonmetal). The metal salt is a salt of metal selected from the group consisting of Co, Ni, Mn and Fe, and the nonmetal salt is a salt of nonmetal selected from the group consisting of Al, Si and B.
