An integrated motor and magnetic bearing includes a rotor (16) having a plurality of permanent magnets (18) and a stator (12) having a plurality of independently controlled coil segments 1-4 magnetically coupled to the permanent magnets. The motor also includes first and second radial position sensors (20 and 22) for sensing the position of the rotor with respect to the stator along a first axis and a second axis, respectively. The motor can perform both radial bearing and rotary torque functions.
