An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chip designed to perform cryptographic algorithms is incorporated onto a server motherboard. Implementation of the ASIC accelerator on the server motherboard achieves all the advantages of the known peripheral accelerators (e.g., increased speed and security) with the addition of minimizing the added space required for the accelerator. Activation of the ASIC accelerator is achieved by inputting an enabling key value into the BIOS of the server. Alternatively, the ASIC accelerator can be activated by execution of an EPROM script. |
