PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head protect mechanism which can make a tape drive small in thickness and is strong against a load. SOLUTION: In the head protect mechanism (50) which keeps a joint part of a leader tape (71) from coming into contact with a magnetic head (31) in order to protect it, a protect arm (51) is installed on the surface of a chassis (12) with being free to ratate close to an actuator assembly (20) and has a tape pass groove (51a). A protect lever (54) installed on the reverse side of the chassis with being free to rotate has its one end (541) close to a ring cam (62) and installed so that it can engage with the cam surface (621), and the other end (542) is connected to the tip of an arm part (514) of the protect arm through a hole (12c). A spring (53) is always held so that it would spring back in a direction to have the protect arm closer to the actuator assembly.
