PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of using a light when colors are recreated in time division by a sequential shutter (CS). SOLUTION: In the projector which is provided with a modulating element 200, a light source 100 illuminating the modulating element, an illuminating apparatus and a projecting lens 300 forming an optical image from the modulating element, the sequential shutter 130, which recreates colors in time division, is placed between the light source 100 and the projecting lens 300, and a reflective polarizing plate 140, which reflects at least a part of lights (e.g. G and B) except a passed light (e.g. R) through the sequential shutter 130 to the light source 100 is provided. The method of driving utilizes said reflected light.
