PURPOSE: A system and a method for selecting sample streams in direct sequence spread spectrum communications are provided to offer demodulating fingers having the capability to assign a specific sample stream, from among a plurality of received sample streams, to any of the demodulating fingers. CONSTITUTION: Demodulating fingers(114-120) include a MUX to receive the plurality of sample streams, respectively. Commands from a controller(122) to the MUX of demodulating fingers(114-120) select a specific sample stream to be demodulated by the demodulating fingers(114-120). Since each demodulating finger(114-120) receives all the sample streams, and any sample stream can be selected, the receiver has the flexibility of optimally varying the assignment of demodulating fingers(114-120) to sample streams.
