PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the durability and electromagnetic transducing characteristics of a magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 10 with a magnetic layer 2 formed by coating with a magnetic coating material on a nomnagnetic substrate 1, the content ratio of carbon constituting a binder to the element of a magnetic powder in the surface layer of the magnetic layer 2 is adjusted to >=90 vol/% and that in >=50Ådepth from the surface of the magnetic layer 2 is adjusted to <=70 vol/%.
