Method for classifying documents

A banknote type is determined from a number of possible types, based on the characteristics (12) of the documents (10) being classified. To classify the documents characteristics are selected that are more significant than the remaining document characteristics and the documents are then classified using the most significant characteristics. An optimum characterization process is based on principle component analysis (PCA) in which a separate adaptation process is undertaken using reference documents. Their characteristics are combined to form reference vectors which can then be compared to the significant components corresponding to the characteristics of the documents to be classified.
