PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone communication system that can transmit voice and text data without increasing a present communication channel capacity. SOLUTION: A base station 1 is provided with a sound/silence discrimination section 11 that discriminates sound/silence from a voice signal to be sent to a terminal 2, a sound compression section 12 that compresses a sound period, a silence compression section 13 that compresses a silence period, a data storage section 14 that stores data, a data multiplexer section 15 that multiplexes the data with the silence compression signal, and a signal transmission section 16 that transmits the silence compression signal with which the data are multiplexed and the sound compression signal to the terminal 2. On the other hand, the terminal 2 is provided with a sound/silence discrimination section 21 that discriminates sound/silence, a data demultiplexer section 23 that demultiplexes the data from the silence compression signal, a sound expansion section 22 that applies expansion processing to the sound compression signal, a silence expansion section 24 that applies expansion processing to the silence compression signal from which the data are demultiplexed, a voice output section that outputs the voice subjected to expansion processing, a data storage section 25 that stores the demultiplexed data, and a data display section 27 that displays the data.
