PURPOSE: An automatic character recognition and manual character input keyboard and key structure is provided to enable a user to push keys with a plurality of characters arranged on one key, to combine characters into a plurality of candidate words by using a database storing words, structures and statistical data, and then to select one among the displayed candidate words. CONSTITUTION: The method, for inputting characters via the keyboard comprises steps of a user selecting an automatic input mode or a manual input mode(1-1), if selecting the automatic input mode, the user pushing a key(1-3), a computer system selecting one character representing the key with a plurality of characters arranged and displaying the representative character on a monitor(1-4), the system storing the character(1-5), the system checking if starting to perform a search operation according to a search pattern(1-6), the system returning to the step 1-3 if the user wants to input the next character in the same word(1-7), the system returning to the step 1-1 if the user wants to input characters of other word(1-8), the system completing the input steps if more characters are not input via the key(1-9), the system combining the characters to be input into words(1-11), the system searching for the words the user intends to input(1-12), the system displaying the searched words(1-14), if a plurality of words are searched, the user selecting one(1-19), if one word is searched, the user checking if the word is correct(1-20), if the word is not intended, the user modifying the input steps and returning to the step 1-6(1-23), and if there is no searched word, the system going to a manual character input step(1-24).
