PURPOSE: A method of setting an RF gain of an optical recording medium is provided to detect an optimum recording optical power value more accurately and prevent reproduction characteristic of recorded data from being deteriorated. CONSTITUTION: It is confirmed if data is recorded in an optical recording medium(S50). When it is confirmed that the data is not recorded in the optical recording medium, signal reflection characteristic of the optical recording medium is detected(S51). A gain value of a reproduction signal is set according to the detected signal reflection characteristic(S53). The gain value is set such that the value is in inverse proportion to the detected signal reflection characteristic. After the gain value is set, an optimum recording optical power value is detected(S54). Then, a recording operation requested is performed using the optimal recording optical power value(S55).
