PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for the first time total synthesis of sphingofungin E having useful physioilogical activity. SOLUTION: A method for producing the sphingofungin E via a new compound of formula (I) [wherein, R1, R2 and R6 are each an OH-protecting group; A is N3, NH2 or NHCOR8 (R8 is a lower alkyl or aromatic group); and B is CH2-OR3 (R3 is an OH-protecting group) or CH=CH-X (X is a halogen)] starting from a known compound is provided.
