PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for changing a non-magnetic material into a magnetic state in manufacture of a patternized magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium is composed of a process wherein a substrate having the layer of the non- magnetic material which is changed into the magnetic state by being annealed is prepared and a process wherein the selected part of the non-magnetic material is annealed by directly shining a focused radiating beam on the substrate, whereby the selected part is changed into the magnetic state, and consequently a patternized magnetic layer including the ordered array of the magnetic area mutually separated by the non-magnetic material is formed.
