A floor covering having a backing layer formed from a polymer compositi on includes a barrier layer formulated and configured to inhibit the migration of moisture from a substrate into the backing layer and to inhibit the migration of backing layer constituents out of the backing layer. The barrier layer also inhibits migration of backing layer constituents into an adhesive layer attached beneath the backi ng layer, thereby preventing degradation of the adhesive's effectiveness due to interaction with these constituents. The barrier layer also prevents contact between plasticizers used in the backing layer and moisture within or on the surface of the floor to which the carpet is adhered.
