Coloring, printing or painting of wood substrates, preferably wooden furniture or toys by means of a dispersion coloring agent, comprises: (a) coating the substrate surface with an aqueous dispersion of a self cross-linking polymer; (b) drying; (c) hardening the self cross-linking polymer; and (d) applying a dispersion coloring agent onto the coated substrate surface. An independent claim is also included for the resulting coated and printed/colored substrate.
