The invention relates to an input device and to a method for carrying out handwriting recognition for an electronic information and communications system. According to the invention, the input device (1, 9) for carrying out handwriting recognition comprises a wireless data interface (7, 8) to the electronic information and communications system (2, 3, 4), and comprises means for recognizing the movement of stylus (5). The invention is characterized in that means, which are provided for translating the movement information into digital characters that conform to those of a keyboard, are arranged in the wirelessly connected input device.
