The safety barrier consists of a series of basic modules. each comprising a horizontal round-section timber rail (13) reinforced by wide and thin steel strips (15, 16) set in lengthwise slots (12) and overlapping the rail ends. The steel strips are fastened in the slots by bolts (14) passing through the rails, while other bolts fasten the rails to timber supporting posts (18) via spacers (17). Variants of the design can have double rails connected by the steel reinforcing strips.
