The invention relates to a device and a method for testing a railway wheel (1) comprising a running surface (2), which lies and rolls on the contact surface (3) of a rail (4). The invention is characterised in that in the vicinity of the contact surface (3), inside the rail, a large number of probes (6) that emit and receive ultrasound waves is arranged along the rail in the form of a linear array, in such a way that each individual probe emits ultrasound waves into the railway wheel via the contact surface and receives ultrasound waves that are reflected within the railway wheel, whilst the latter is rolling over said probes. The probes are also arranged along the longitudinal direction of the rails, inclined in an oblique manner inside the rail, forming an angle (a) with the longitudinal axis of the rail.
