PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mat type fender which can be manufactured at a cost as low as about 1/10 of the unit cost of a conventional one. SOLUTION: This mat type fender mainly comprises a mat, a filler cushioning material (waste tires cut into pieces and filled in bags), and patches. The mat is formed by knitting ropes of petrochemical fibers (nylon, polyethylene, etc.), on the market in an airtight manner so that the filled cushioning material is prevented from leaking outside, and the size of the mat is determined according to the tonnage of a ship to be docked. The filled cushioning material is formed by cutting waste tires into small pieces, and prevents the shock when the ship is docked and moored. The patch is formed of a steel plate. The mat is fixed to a berth. The fender further comprises a means using a covered rope, a fixed rope, etc., in order to prevent any move or collapse deformation of the mat and the filled cushioning material.
