PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface light emission illumination device which can be highly-efficient, small-sized, and thin and which can have a large area regarding an illumination device including a backlight or the like of a display unit such as a liquid crystal display or the like. SOLUTION: This is the illumination device wherein a light source is arranged on at least one of four peripheries of a light guide plate consisting of transparent substrates. The light source is a surface light emitting element which is formed on a transparent body. The transparent body of the surface light emitting element and the light guide plate are jointed on a transparent jointing layer and the refractive index of the transparent body, the light guide plate and the transparent jointing layer are made nearly equal so that a surface light emitter and the light guide plate can be optically coupled, which makes lights efficiently enter into the light guide plate. Further, light is efficiently emitted from the light guide plate, being scattered by scattering dots installed at a lower surface of the light guide plate. |
