An electronic scale cartridge plugs into a piece of office equipment, such as a PC (31) or a peripheral device (21, 41, 51), or a portable electronic device (130), such as PDA (140) or wireless communication device. The scale cartridge has a connector (14) which fits a universal or standard port. Postage for an item weighed by the scale cartridge is computed by a program stored in the PC or portable device, which preferably has one or more interactive display screens (600, 610, 620, 630, 640) in a Windows format to step the user through the process, based on a weight signal received from the scale cartridge. A second embodiment allows attachment to piece of office equipment by a variety of fasteners (152, 123, 500, 506, 510, 515, 520) which establishes a removable or rotatable connection. A third embodiment includes a docking station (610) which has a surface (640) for supporting the office equipment.
