The axis (32) of the pedaling wheel (36) is carried on a plate (46) which is pivoted (48) on the frame (16). As pedaling effort is applied the plate swivels and a deformable element (52,54) attached to the frame is stretched allowing a cable (62) to vary the stiffness of a suspension (12). The action of the cable is damped (90) in order to allow for the cyclic variations in pedaling torque. Independent claims are made for suspensions able to work with the pedaling effort or chain tension detector.
