PURPOSE: A refrigerator and method for controlling operation of refrigerator is provided to achieve an improved user convenience by allowing a user to search cooking information in an easy manner through Internet. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerator comprises a communication unit(80) connected to an external communication line for access to Internet; a first memory(61) for storing data regarding the stored commodity; a second memory(62) for storing database of cooking information for each menu; a touch panel(40) for inputting key signals in accordance with user's requests; a display unit(70) mounted to the front surface of the refrigerator, and which displays data regarding the stored commodity and cooking information stored in first and second memories, respectively, in accordance with the key signal input through the touch panel; and a main control unit(50) for controlling a refrigerator micro computer(10) so as to perform the operation corresponding to the key signal input through the touch panel, and upgrading the cooking information stored in the second memory with the cooking information downloaded through the communication unit, or transmitting the cooking information stored in the second memory to outside.
