The method involves feeding volatile gas from a tank via a filter and feeding the filter material under vacuum via an induction system into an engine. The filter is connected to the induction system via a mechanism whose drive signal is cross-correlated with a measurement parameter defining the state of the induction system using a diagnostic signal for the tank venting system as a correlation coefficient. Engine parameters are monitored. The method involves feeding volatile gas emanating from a tank (14) and containing hydrocarbons via a filter (32) and feeding the filter material under vacuum via an induction system (16) into an internal combustion engine (18). The filter is connected to the induction system via a time-controlled switching mechanism whose drive signal is cross-correlated with a measurement parameter defining the state of the induction system using a correlation coefficient in the form of a diagnostic signal for the tank venting system. Engine operating parameters that influence induction pipe pressure are checked for maintenance of at least one threshold value and/or a defined operating parameter.
