A cylindrical mounting (11) houses a laser source (8,9), deflecting prism (14) and ccd camera (15,16). The member (3) rests in a trough (5) and curved stop (2). A step motor (7) adjusts the trough to locate the joint (4) above the light source. Measurements are taken at angular intervals by rotating the cylindrical mounting. A computer can use the images from the ccd to calculate the peripheral dimensions of the joint.
