Production of an embossing tool comprises forming a central zone containing carbides by thermally melting the tool surface and simultaneously forming a remelting zone having a lower hardness than the central zone running coaxially to the central zone and a further outer conversion zone surrounding the remelting zone. The conversion zone has a lower hardness than the remelting zone and the tool surface. The thermal energy is adjusted so that the topography of the tool remains unchanged in the micro-region.
