The unit uses a reflectometer (10) to detect the signal weakening effect of splices (16) made in optical fibres (14). The reflectometer is connected to a personal computer (18) through modems (22,24) and a switched telephone system (22). The personal computer has a screen (28) and mouse (36). The personal computer screen (28) gives a representation of the front of the reflectometer and the mouse is used to operate the controls in a manner similar to that in commonly used graphical interfaces.
