The invention relates to the production of 2-hydroxyethylmaleimide (HEMI) by: a) reacting furan and maleic anhydride to a furan-adduct (Furan-A); b) reacting ethanolamine with Furan-A to form a hydroxyethylmaleimide-adduct (HEMI-A); and c) deprotecting HEMI-A to form HEMI; and to HEMI in pure form obtained by the process.
