PURPOSE: Provided is a method to control mol.wt. and mol.wt. distribution of vinyl polymer by adding a dithioester chain transfer agent in polymerization. A novel chain transfer agent of chemical formula 1 is used in polymerization of living polymer. By using this new chain transfer agent, production cost is lowered because purification process like in conventional method is not needed. CONSTITUTION: In the dithioester of chemical formula 1, Ar is aromatic or hetero aromatic groups constituted with 1-3 aromatic rings and substituted with one group selected from chlorine, alkyl, aryl, alkylthio, keto, ester, amide, ether, cyano, phosphite, thio and hydroxyl group and substituted alkyl, aryl or polymer chain produced during reaction; R1 is hydrogen, C1-C24 alkyl, C1-C12 hydroxyalkyl, C1-C12 haloalkyl, C1-C12 cyanoalkyl, C2-C12 aminoalkyl or iminoalkyl, C3-C18 ether, C4-C18 hydroxyalkyl or cyanoalkylether, C7-C14 alkenyl or arylalkyl, C2-C7 alkylene or C4-C14 cycloalkyl substituted by one group selected from phosphite, ester, keto, ester, amide, ether, thio and hydroxy; R2, R3 are independently, hydrogen, C2-C24 alkyl, C1-C12 hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, C2-C12 aminoalkyl or iminoalkyl, C3-C18 ether, C4-C18 hydroxyalkyl or cyanoalkylether, C7-C14 alkenyl or arylalkyl, C2-C7 alkylene or C4-C14 cycloalkyl substituted by one group selected from phosphite, ester, keto, ester, amide, ether, thio and hydroxy. The polymerization comprises adding at least 0.1-0.8mol. dithio ester to 1mol. of at least one initiator selected from peroxide and azo initiator and at least 0.001-0.01mol. initiator to 100mol. vinyl monomer and mixing at -20-200deg.C for 1-100 hours in at least one solvent selected from water, alcohol, ether, ester, ketone, amide, aliphatic hydrocarbon and aromatic hydrocarbon to produce vinyl polymers with 500-200,000 average number mol.wt.
