PURPOSE: A wireless infrared peripheral interface for a communication device is provided to enable a user to select a hands-free operation with various peripheral devices, which are far away from a cellular communication system, through an infrared porting scheme including an infrared peripheral device, so as to maintain IR data transmissions even when the communication device is mobile. CONSTITUTION: A wireless infrared peripheral interface(10) for a communication device(12) includes a cellular wireless transceiver(14). The peripheral interface(10) includes at least one infrared signal source(16) and at least one infrared detector(18). The signal source(16) and the infrared detector(18) are coupled with a distributed optical device(20). An interface circuit(28) is coupled with the infrared signal source(16) and the detector(18). A processor(30) coupled with the interface circuit(28) controls the interface circuit(28), and processes data signals transmitted through the infrared source(16) and the detector(18), to make the interface circuit(28) communicate with peripheral devices near to the communication device(12). The distributed optical device(20) reduces dependency of optical arrangements between infrared data ports of the peripheral devices and the communication device(12).
