The casting has a ductile material system embedded (32) within white cast iron forming the casting, providing many small ligaments of ductile material, having a thin coating (38) of an alcohol-based slurry of fine ceramic particles in an organic binder. The thickness of the coating provides intimate proximity of the coated ductile material to the solidified white cast metal.
