PURPOSE: To realize an oxide-coated cathode capable of smoothening the current density distribution of the discharge electron and of allowing no deterioration in the electron discharge characteristic even after a use for a long time and provide a cathode-ray tube of a high resolution and without the visibility of the of the moire phenomenon. CONSTITUTION: An alkaline-earth metal carbonate salt is coated on the cathode base 3 in such manner that its bulk density becomes 0.5 g/cm3 or more and 0.8 g/cm3 or less and then a press treatment is applied to the above in such a manner that its bulk density becomes 0.9 g/cm3 or less.
